Face to face with Lucija Čok

What is your background in the field of regional and minority languages/education/ multilingualism?

As researcher in intercultural studies and multilingualism, professor of sociolinguistics, and didactics of languages I have done several research projects on bilingual models in education, on languages as human capital and on intercultural education. My bibliography counts more than 50 scientific articles in Slovenian and foreign languages, 5 scientific monographs as author or first author. I have organised scientific conferences and lectured at several foreign universities, collaborated in European Commission expert panels for linguistic policies and research strategies. I’m a member of evaluation board of EUA IEP. I have received the high award from the President of Italy and the president of France for having promoted languages and strategies for the encouragement of linguistic diversity (Cavaliere della repubblica italiana, Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur).

What do you think is the major challenge in your field of work?
Awareness of the inherent tension between developing a new political order of integration /globalisation of various trends (labour market, knowledge and research, mobility of goods and people) and heritage of values in the society that sustains the preceding level of language diversity and social cohesion, and the relevance of language skills for working within the new economy. Focus on analysing and interpreting the role of education in fomenting a competence that can contribute to maintain language diversity and understand the relationship between multilingualism and inter/ trans/ crossculturalism, integration processes and minorities, preservation of immigrants’ languages and cultures, construction of identities / multiple identities.

What is one of the hottest new projects / items you are working on?
Intercultural dimension of virtual communication: Semantics, syntax and sentimental analysis of uttering messages, supported by ICT.
